The ability to adjust the current flow to the microphone allows you to change the gain or sound pick up. The more you turn the courtroom recorders record level higher, the loudest the microphone gets. This is a huge advantage to court clerks who has a witness who is whispering.

Being uni-directional, the microphone picks up only what it is pointed at. This eliminates all the background noise you usually get from omni-directional microphones.
